The GIA uses the term alexandrite (incorectly IMO) to refer to any color changing, shifting chrysoberyl.
I think they should use the same wisdom with "alexandrite" they do with padparadscha,

Yes - my opinion too. :D

Treated Pads?

Nick, there is an article about it

https://www.ssef.ch/wp-content/uploads/ ... tte_24.pdf

The stone in figure 5 - how cool!!! Chameleon padparadscha/pink sapphire...need one.

The „pad“ in your pic is what I call a swindle padparadscha - a mostly pink stone with a small orange area. Not a pad imo.

It's in the new Gem-A Journal of Gemmology.
I'll send it to you.

I think this has been a known possibility since the 40s or so, when early irradiation experiments showed how easy it was to introduce an unstable yellow to sapphire. It can occir natirally as well, so unheated yellows in general have to be viewed with a hint of suspicion.

I agree, the hue is too bold, but if what you are looking for is a certificate that says padparadscha, you might submit it to GIA. I have a stone which is even redder and darker in tone that received the much desired certificate.

Here is my take on padparadscha: http://www.thefrenchblue.com/rww_blog/c ... paradscha/
