Supervisory Research Geologist (Mineralogy) Department of Mineral Sciences National Museum of Natural History
SALARY RANGE: Starting at $114,590, commensurate with experience OPEN PERIOD: 11/16/2018– 12/21/2018, or until filled DUTY LOCATION: Washington, DC
The Department of Mineral Sciences invites applications for the position of mineralogist/curator as the Coralyn Wright Whitney Chair in Gems and Minerals. Preference will be given to candidates whose primary research focuses on study of mineral structures and behaviors, and mineral surface interactions. Examples include but are not limited to: X-ray diffraction and/or Raman and FTIR studies of mineral structures, the impacts of microbial or other biological activity on mineral alteration, mineral weathering, crystal growth and mineral formation, and metal redox transformations. The successful candidate will be a recognized leader in mineralogy and have a proven track record of extensive published research. A primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be curation of the National Gem and Mineral Collection; extensive experience in curation with demonstrated responsibility for building a significant mineral collection is required. Proven experience leading and supervising diverse groups of individuals and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of audiences, including donors and the public, are essential.
The Dept. of Mineral Sciences houses a world-class collection of minerals and gems that are used for a broad array of research and public programs both within and outside of the Smithsonian Institution. The selected candidate will be expected to maintain a record of research excellence, and oversee the growth and curation of the National Gem and Mineral Collection. Applicants should fully utilize the existing analytical strengths of the Dept. of Mineral Sciences, with instrumentation that includes field emission electron microprobe, field emission variable pressure analytical SEM, XRD, Raman, FTIR, fluid inclusion heating/freezing unit, cathodoluminescence microscope and spectrometer, biomineralogy laboratory, and experimental high-pressure and hydrothermal laboratories. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in museum activities, such as exhibits programs, educational outreach activities, and to be involved with professional associations and other organizations within the scientific community.
Full-time appointment with full Smithsonian benefits to be filled at the IS-14 level, equivalent to Federal GS-14. The position is open to all candidates eligible to work in the United States. Proof of eligibility to work in the United States is not required to apply but is required before the selected applicant may begin work.
KEY REQUIREMENTS: · Pre-employment Background Investigation must be successfully completed. · Must be able to travel and work independently as well as within a team environment.
Candidates may qualify for this position by demonstrating the experience outlined above. In addition, candidates must possess a degree in an applicable subject matter field (Job Family 1350-Geology), or a combination of education and experience that provides knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through successful completion of a four year course of study in an applicable subject matter field. A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree related to the position is highly desired.

Wowza, those are some stiff requirements. Not too many people would qualify for that one. Quite a prestigious position, though (and no doubt quite a bit of fun too).
