I should have the scope on Tuesday.

I have a question about the oculars. Would there be any advantage to purchasing a set of 15 X oculars for this scope? Obviously, I would get more magnification but doing so would also require me to switch them out to the 10 X if I wanted view stones under the standard 10 X with quality optics.

Is that the reason that many gem scopes come with the 10 X oculars? So that you can view stones at Loupe level of 10 X with quality optics?

if you wanna grade diamonds you've to stick to standard 10X so, you're correct.
Neverthless sometimes higher mag could be required, i would prefer to purchase a duplicator lens instead the 15x oculars.

Where would I buy a duplicator lens? Are they specific to the scope?

AO equipped Gemolites have initial magnification of 0.67x at their lowest zoom setting.
With a 15x ocular this is the standard 10x magnification. You do not need 10x oculars.
They were shipped (by GIA)with 15x oculars.

Why do some of the scopes say "GIA Mark V Gemolite" and others say "GEM Instruments Mark V Gemolite?
Are they just different model years and therefore changed the labels over the course of the years?

Gem Instruments is and always was a wholly owned subsidiary of GIA. The labels are not important.

Please see the link's description of the eye pieces. Scroll down to the bottom where he has the description listed.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... MEWAX%3AIT

He states: "Has (2) 10X Eyepieces with Guards."

I've seen other scopes listed on ebay that have 10x oculars as well. Am I confused about what I'm considering as the oculars?

If the scope comes with 10x oculars then you get the standard 10x
mag with the zoom knob set at 1.0x

15x AO oculars are easy to find for not too much money.

It is optically better to use an auxiliary lens (if you want more mag) because this increases the resolving power somewhat. But 15x oculars work fine too. If you put 15x oculars on you can still have the "standard" 10x magnification with the zoom knob set at 0.7x

This is not the case with an auxiliary lens. With a 2x in place the minimum mag will be 1.4x times the ocular so either 14x or 21x (for 10x and 15x oculars respectively)

Thanks for the clarification G4Lab.

Once I get the scope and play around with it this weekend I will decide if I need to purchase any more optics.

but with an 1.5X in place you could have a minimum mag of 10x with standard 10x oculars.

So much for clarification... So what is the minimum magnification with the original optics that come with this scope?

0.67X

Even though the scope label reads "0.7X"? From what I've been seeing, scouring the internet, the Bausch and Lomb scopes come standard with "0.67X" and the AO scopes come with "0.7X".

I guess I need to learn more about optic design and magnification. As I understand it, which may not be correct, the scope I just bought has a minimum magnification of 7X. If I were to replace the oculars with 15x eyepieces I would have a minimum magnification of 10.5X.

Do I have it all wrong? Am I missing a piece of the equation here?

But it would be more like 10.5x
