Quote:
Commercial names for gemstones are something we have been monitoring and researching for a long time. The various perceptions regarding these colors are amazing. When asked, traders from markets around the world point to different areas in our Gemewizard color system for the same color description.

Let's take for example a recent issue that we undertook with sapphires. Somehow, when asking people what Royal Blue is, most would know what color you mean and point towards the same area in the system. It is this vivid highly-saturated velvety blue, which may have a touch of violet, and in various depths of hue. The borders may move slightly between the varieties of opinions, but all agree on the correct area.

However, when asked to point to the Cornflower Blue colors in Gemewizard, we fell into a lively debate. We could not find common ground from which to begin. So, we compared the Gemewizard system with gemological reports containing the cornflower comment, outlined its borders, and asked the traders to look at it again. The marked region was very limited, comprising of only three color-reference points in the Gemewizard’s hue 23 (GIA's violetish blue) palette.

Interestingly, very few traders actually pointed to the correct colors. These traders had surely seen some cornflower blue sapphires in the past. Yet, somehow, their color was not stored in their memories.

This led us to an interesting conclusion: It seems that everyone wants a cornflower blue sapphire in their inventory. But, (almost) no one remembers what it looks like.
The Gemewizard machine learning system records and remembers every color it scans. It never misses colors nor forgets their borders...

Therefore, if you wish to distinguish these colors accurately, dive into our Gemewizard sapphire colors, that have been so painfully collected by means of the knowledge of many experts, and learn, once and for all, what Cornflower Blue actually is!

A cornflower is also called a bachelor button:

Can't imagine why they don't call it Bachelor Button Blue. It's alliterative!

I can confirm I've seen some arguments about what cornflower blue is on facebook, so it's interesting to hear this from gemewizard (though they are not without direct commercial interest in the outcome so I do have to take it with a small grain of salt).

Judging from the confusion of recognizing red in a ruby, it doesn't surprise me that facebook would have a series of threads defining cornflower.
