I am excited to announce that my first book, The Secret Teachings of Gemcutting, is now available for preorder on Kickstarter:

Hello Justin,

I would be interested. But I would not like to register on Kickstarter just for that.

Would that be available on Amazon as the books from Tom Herbst ?

I as well will most likely add your diagram book to my collection when available, until then I will wait for the actual release. I did watch your YouTube video on the contents. Looks like the book will be a useful informational source.

It's a pity the shipping costs are so so high for a 21x26cm book, but you have my backing.
Would cutting down on the number of photo pages to focus just on the design pages and text be a possibility?

What about a digital version of the book?

Excited to back this. I wouldn't have dared to buy a handpiece machine as my first machine w/o your video explaining how to set up the handpiece.

Having run KS campaigns before, int'l shipping's always super expensive and I'm happy to see the costs are sufficiently realistic. So many campaigns over the years have run themselves into the ground miscalculating shipping costs.

Justin, you have associates (aka friends) on every continent and perhaps every country in the world.
Couldn't you organize local shipping in most cases?

A digital version would be really good, actually. Most zine makers offer this.

Rethought my earlier post and we gave our support to your project Justin and the future of faceting around the globe.

Hi All and thanks for the comments and support. No plans for a digital book, I’m really only interested in creating tangible works at this point. As for the shipping, I’m also sad that this was the best offer I could find. I’m still talking to logistics companies but so far no one has offered a better price than USPS. $40 to most countries. The book is a hefty tome, about 3lbs in the box.

For anyone in far away places, I recommend trying to find others in your area that also want to buy. There is an option for a box of 8 books on the Kickstarter. The shipping comes out to $12/book plus you get a 10% discount off the sale price. I think people in Australia should really organize something. I tried talking to the GAA but no one wanted to be responsible for it and I personally have to time to organize it. There are a bunch of buyers in Australia all paying $40 for shipping which is a shame.

Otherwise I’m so pleased with how the book came out. We have two more weeks to tweak it before the Kickstarter ends and we are tweaking heavily still to make it PERFECT. Better photos and a few added and improved theory sections. I don’t think anyone will be disappointed with this even if they paid $40 for shipping.

Ps it’s not going to be on Amazon and I don’t think hardcovers will be available after the Kickstarter due to production costs so get em while their available. There will be spiral versions available later. I’ll have them at Tucson next year and then in the 2nd half of 2022 I’m doing a faceting research road trip around the US and we will have some then.

That's too bad about not doing a digital version. Normally for books I prefer a printed old fashioned book, but for gem designs, I prefer to print out the design on paper. With the book close to the machine during cutting, the page often get splashed on, and very often I end up writing on the design. Maybe I change angles a bit to make the crown fit, or slightly modify the design on the flow. With a digital book, one could just reprint the page if it were to get wet or marked up too much.
It would also save on shipping expense, and would save you the expense of having it printed. Seems like a win win all the way around.

Justin,
Just having a morning Joe and a check of my inbox, found awaiting new Kickstarter update #6 on the book project. I am somewhat disappointed in some of changes if I understand your updates correctly. In the image you show the book in the middle that I believed was the dipiction of the book, but the other two appear to be just loose bound printed paper by a spiral binder. Just unclear now what I, we have invested in. Can you update on what is actually changing on the cover and the inner pages you sold the project on?

Hi Greg.
I'm not sure a Kickstarter contribution entitles a donor to have much of a say on how the recipient chooses to make their concept into a reality.

Sidebar: Tom Herbst's Lapidary books were published by Facet Publishing in the UK.
This actually seems like it might be an option for Justin. Just sayin'.

Hi Barbra,
Thanks for the words of encouragement, hadn't quite finished that cup of joe at my sounding off of disappointment. First starter probably last at this point and not really about the money. Feels a little from the update like in our biz offering and promising a network buyer a 14kw ring with a natural gemstone made in the USA and producing and delivering .925 rhodium plated hydrothermal quartz ring made in India. All probably a bit premature at this point. Yes was looking forward to a published book of similarity of Tom's books just in a spiral form. Awaiting if Justin can give a better update than on the Kickstarter update as to how the final version compares to his concept.

Greg,
I just checked the Kick Starter site, and everything looks the same. Did your update email look different that what is shown there?
