Since Gearloose no longer sells dual zone laps I will be creating one for use in stone repair. I plan to take a BATT lap, mark it to divide the soon to be 3K outer ring from the 60K inner ring. Does anyone know the measurement from the outside of an 8"/20cm lap where this dividing line should be. I don't want to guess if there is an accepted standard.

Thank you,

OEM's are around 34mm.
Generally if your dividing out a Batt, the standard if any would be your preference and technic of use.
I myself using a Poly-Metric, typically in the general 5-7 o-clock area. Here less mast repositioning to angle is needed. I do have a slight swing tolerance so just some height adjusting is needed occasionally. This is why I say any standards are somewhat self imposed.

Greg,

Thanks, I divided it up, a little thinner on the outside and went to work. The lap works great but a new problem arose that I did not anticipate. When wiping the swarf off of a facet that is getting pre-polished, how to you avoid scratching the polished facet adjacent with the scarf?

Thanks,

Have you noticed this happening? I have not, and have been using dual charged laps for years.

The only issue I have experienced is that the two zones don't wear down at the same rate. This is after polishing many many stones, so you won't see this for some time. What it does cause is you will need to make a small adjustment when going from the pre-polish to polish since the surface of the laps are not on the same plane.

What I normally do when a lap gets to this state is polish all the facets on the same tier on the prepolish, then polish them all at once with the final polish.

Eventually you can have the lap resurfaced, and the issue goes away.

My sentiment exactly, not a problem.

Agree here as well.
Some of the OEM laps I have noticed can have a slight height difference as well, mostly noticed on the outer metal to the inner composite types. But it seems irrelevant here.

Do you guys know any other manufactures that make duel zoned laps? And how much a difference in speed would you say there is in using a duel zoned lap?

Thanks!
