Can anyone suggest a source for a candlelight filter that will fit a small flashlight? I had one that was an exact fit for a regular Maglite but it was lost, misplaced or teleported somewhere during a recent interstate move.
I found it very helpful in photographing color-change gems. If anyone has suggestions for a work-around in case such filters are not available I'd be grateful for any input. TIA!

Have you tried any of the camera shops like Adorama, B&H they usually carry gels and filters. Not sure if they will emulate the sun enough though. Sounds like something Stephen might know.

As I recall it was from a gemological supplier. I've tried GIA , Eslinger and a couple others and found nothiing. I'll give Adorama etc. a shot if this request fails. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, I vaguely remember someone offering a torch that was claimed capable of emitting 2 different portions of the spectrum (possibly from different ends): In the blue-green (470-520 nm) and red (>650 nm) .
I'm thinking that if this gadget successfully did what it was supposed to do, it would still be available somewhere. Perhaps the gizmo emitted "warm" and "cool" light like many LED light sources do today.
Viewing the alexandrite I have with my "warm/cool" overhead light I have in the lab, it does appear rather purplish with 100% warm and bright green in 100% cool.
Thanks Bob. I'll need to research the Ebay offering it a bit to decide. The second one is definitely a non-starter due to price but many thanks for going to all that trouble.

I'm a bit of a color changing stone fanatic and I would say my favorite source of light is one of those old xenon bulb maglites. I've never been able to get the full color change with any color LED. They're hard to find but usually available online somewhere. If you can't find one I stocked up on about a dozen knockoffs on my last trip to Chanthaburi I could send you one, it's a very valuable tool for photography and buying in the field.

This is probably common knowledge but a filter will only work if the light source contains the correct spectrum. You cannot get "candlelight" illumination from a filter if the light source is an LED or fluorescent. Only xenon or old school incandescent filament lightsource would work.
