This is one of a pair of earrings. I want to sell them online but of course I have to describe them. I wonder if they can be American Freshwater pearls, though I understand that those are rare and for that reason it's unlikely. Do Japanese cultured pearls come in these unusual shapes? The earrings are not new. They are at least 40 years old.

Why do you suspect that these pearls are American?

I was thinking they might be American freshwater pearls because the few that I had seen in the past were white and had a somewhat elongated shape. These are very smooth and when I view them with a light shining through from the back, I don't see any "rings" from the embedded bead that I might see in saltwater cultured pearls. Maybe those rings are only visible on round pearls. Do you have any experience of your own with pearls of this shape?

The Mississippi natural fresh water pearls I've seen are a little spindly.

Can you turn the piece over an provide a photo of the back side?
Thanks!

You might want to check out some Tennessee pearls too... I think all American pearls (other than from Hawaii) are freshwater pearls. (I could be wrong though - and I don't think pears have come out of Pearl Harbor in many years.)

They sure look like they have irritants implanted.
Must admit, organics are not my strong suit.

Thanks for your response. I'm wondering what you see there that is indicating to you that there are irritants implanted. As I mentioned before, the only way that I could tell in a round cultured pearl is by seeing those parallel lines in the bead by shining a light through it.
