This just popped up on Science daily today about a new, extinct species of flowering plant from the Cretaceous: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/01/140103204510.htm I don't think that we could come up with a better method of preserving specimens for this long with all of the technology at our disposal. The preserved detail is just amazing.
