Hello folks,

I came across these rough specimens of Sapphires and Rubies from Pakistani part of Kashmir (Gilgit-Baltistan to be exact). The sapphires are a dark blue/ purplish variety while the ruby specimens were all light to dark pinkish variety. To be exact, these rubies and Sapphires were mined in the belt between Hunza and Skardu, which is the same mountain range that also crosses the Indian Kashmir where the famous Kashmir Sapphire is found. These sapphire specimens are not as famous or valuable as those. These are mined from May to October end before the weather turns cold and icy in the mountains, thereby making it impossible to mine these all year around. The owner of these specimens did show me a few gemstones faceted from this kind of material, and they didn't look bad at all.

Does anybody have any idea of the composition/ geological characteristics of these sapphires and rubies?
