Hello,

I have a question for the respected members of this forum. Majority of the sapphires in existence are heated for color enhancement. How much does that diminish the value of the sapphire? Is it an acceptable practice? Some sapphires, like sapphires from Kashmir, are considered rare. But what if the sapphires found in Kashmir are light in color, and are heated to give a beautiful velvet, cornflower blue color? Would that diminish their value substantially, especially if they are above 5 carats?

Would love to hear from members.

The simple answer is yes, heated sapphire, and ruby are substantially less expensive than non heated stones of equal color, clarity, size, shape, and origin.

Thank you @1bwana1 and @barbara. But is it an acceptable practice?

Of course! The great majority of corundum is treated.

The only truky unacceptable treatment is one that is undisclosed or unsafe.
In terms of ones that are really bad for value though, lead glass filling and Be diffusion would qualify. Not what you want to get unless you knew wxactly what you were buying.
