Most of the Ethiopian ones I've seen have been kind of off-color, though I'm not 100% sure in which direction. A small subset did have very good color though. These were just the ones I saw offered in small quantities by opal dealers--unfortunately the prices have always been very high, even more than most of the emeralds, though I think I did get a small sample last year.
I saw two parcels said to be from two different areas. Both were included, one tended too dark, and the other a bit light and too yellow. But Kenya tends to have that same sort of distribution. The Ethiopians ask crazy prices for everything. Often parcels just circle around between dealers in country becoming many times more expensive than the World market supports. I find it a difficult place to do business.
It makes sense when you consider that a large portion of Ethiopia is in the Mozambique Geologic belt the same as the deposits to the South. I have followed this belt up through to the border with into Eritrea and some say it crosses all the way over to Yemen and possibly Saudi Arabia.
Wherever it goes it tends to produce gem minerals.
