Recently a 0.89 ct ‘diamond – diamond’ doublet was detected at the diamond lab in Antwerp. Microscopic analysis of the stone immediately revealed strong internal reflections which are very uncharacteristic for a diamond. Furthermore, a join line can clearly be seen in the middle of the faceted girdle. As the facets on the girdle above and underneath this join line do not coincide, it can be concluded that both crown and pavilion were faceted before they were ‘glued’ together. A small band of binding material (different refractive index) containing air bubbles can be found very close to the girdle. No epoxy residue was detected on the stone’s exterior.

Wow.....I wonder, if they wanted it to be more convincing, why not bond the two pieces before faceting? Would the bonding agent not be strong enough to withstand cutting? I mean, not that I want people to succeed at this, but that just seems stupid and reckless, anyone with a loupe could have caught that....

Diamonds probably get too hot in cutting for a "glue" to survive.
Maybe they just wanted a diamond crown for the diffusivity tester, and hoped nobody would look beyond that?
