I am Gemologist from GIA, recently finished with the SSEF Small Diamond Course and currently I am pursuing Gem A foundation course and later heading towards Gem A Gemologist diploma programme.
Looking forward to work in a reputed lab. I have no prior qualification in the field of Gemology/Geology/Mineralogy other than I mentioned above.
Any suggestions as to how I might achieve this dream of working in a lab set up anywhere outside India.

Try making up a list of all the Gem Labs in Europe, then preparing the best C.V. you can and sending a copy to each lab asking if they have any vacancies. Might work.

Most labs which are hiring for their colored stone department are looking for PhDs in a physical science. But GIA is always looking for Diamond Graders.

Hello,
Well, I am happy that there is still a place somewhere in the world, except teaching in an university, for physicists! Here in Quebec, I have heard that the chances to work in physics is pressy low. The only jobs are pretty much in the teaching field. Not much opportunity.

Barbra,
That's interesting... So, gem labs are typically hiring science disciplined PhD's in the Colored Stones sections? What kind of money are the labs paying those folks?

Dear Friends,
Thank you all for your messages.
My gemological background includes GIA and by the year 2018, I will be FGA, after that I am planning to do FEEG diploma, Will it help me to find a job in a lab?
If no, then I am thinking of joining the quality department of a reputed jeweler, so that I will be able to get hands on experience on the quality parameters that they have and bring it back to India.
My main priority is to work in a lab though. It will fulfill my dream of working in science field.

I was recently talking to the field gemology guys in Bangkok and they said everyone in the lab as a Masters or PhD in some science whether thats geology, biology or chemistry. You can get a job as a diamond grader with a GG and if you are personable then from there you could go on to be a teacher at GIA. One of my teacher did that exact thing. If you want to work in the lab then start working towards your masters degree.
