Post subject:  Aspiring Gemologist in the UK Help Please!

Hi everyone,

First of all, apologies if there is already a topic similar to this but I have struggled to find what I am after.

I have worked in luxury jewellery retail for almost three years, and have realised that I thoroughly enjoy working with gemstones, and I think that I have gained a lot of experience and knowledge so far (with plenty more to learn).

I have my JET1 Qualification, and have also done the Gem-A Gembasics Course, I am thinking about starting Gemmology Foundation this March whilst staying in work. Then completing the Gemmology Diploma after that.

My main concern at the moment is that it seems quite tricky to find out where I would then go after completing the two courses. I would preferably like to stay in the UK, maybe do a bit of overseas work from time to time. Can anyone give me any reassurance that after doing the courses that doors will become slightly more open, and where would you suggest I started in contacting companies to work for.

I would ideally like to work in either appraising, buying/sourcing stones for a seller, buying and selling.

I know I might be being quite vague but I would appreciate anyone's insight to this realm, and any advice is more than welcome!

My 2 pence.
Graduating from a gemmology school does not qualify one to be an appraiser.
Appraisal Science is a different skill set.

Graduating from a gemmology school does not qualify you to be a store's buyer.

It qualifies you to positively identify most items represented as gems.

You should be able to grade diamonds reliably, but for diamond grading skills, I would recommend the GIA as they wrote the book on diamond grading.

Why don't you inquire with the shop you are in what they would need a gemmologist to do for them. Gemmological training coupled with skills you acquire in retail environments.
