Congratulations are in order!
Unfortunately, I've lost one of my best suppliers of quality gems at great prices.
Oh well... I'm happy for you Jason and I wish you all the best!
Please drop us a note now and again to let us know how you are doing.
Mitch, Jason is just going to Tucson for the Show....he's not boarding the Starship Enterprise to forevermore explore strange new worlds and boldly go where no man has gone before.

...but if he did, you know those alien worlds would be getting good deals on quality gems!

Though it appears his employer did go where they shouldn't have. And, I for one, am interested to see them in person at next years' Tucson show. That is, if they have the audacity to show themselves. Of course, they have no sense of shame so it will mean nothing to them.

I had a great time in Tuscon this year, met all sorts of great people and learn a lot about selling gems. One of the most important things I learned, though, was to get a written contract for the work and the payment. The agreement I thought we had was quite different than what was paid, and so by the time the show was over, my profit was in experience rather than money. I'm still glad I went, but would do the logistics very differently next time.

If a contract seems inappropriate: Always discuss compensation and expectations via email, not over the phone. Email correspondence IS written documentation and admissible in court,

I was paid $700.00...$100.00 for each day at the show. However, I was in their employ as their chauffeur for 9 days. I was not paid for driving them around.

Heck if they think driving was the bonus they're sadly mistaken in our eyes. So what happened with the potential permanent employment? Boy they'd better have paid for your fares both ways.

I've had this happen in the past, where the "bonus" was dangled, and all sorts of extra work and time were extracted based on verbal agreements. You want to trust the person you're working with, and don't want to be too demanding, but then get bent over when those verbal agreements get ignored.
Jason worked like stink at the show, and had no time for himself before, during or after. Shame on them for not compensating him fairly.
I am in Japan, worked for three months June>September, and then had visa problems. Told I was getting a visa re-application by my ex-boss. Waited for 5 months for a new visa, with barely any income, so I could start working legally again. Wasnt allowed to inquire to immigration about the application, as it is a company application, not an individual`s one.
After 5 months thought "screw this", and pretty much stormed into Japan immigration to demand an explanation. Their answer was that there was to application made. Boss not contactable, and $7000 of savings gone.
Worst part is that I got offered two gemology-based positions in the last fortnight in South East Asia, and now no longer have the funds to fly over and set-up in these countries. Will have to hope they still have work in the Summer, after I rebuild my funds in Japan, and make an over-due visit to the UK.
Jason, do your former employers have a real web presence yet? In my experience this business is a small world indeed and word gets around fast. People who act in a dishonorable way do not last long.
