Dear all,

as for the previous post about Madagascar, Afghanistan and Pakistan, here is a post to enable you to see the photos and the expedition reports of the past GIA Laboratory Bangkok expedition to Sri Lanka. On that expedition the author travelled with a group of young gemologists all around the gem island from Colombo to Ratnapura area, Elahera, Hasalaka, Passara, Bibile, Okkampitiya, Kataragama and finally Galle.

First let me explain a little bit how things works regarding my publications, so then you will know how to get through all that:

These expeditions are organized by the field gemology department of the GIA Laboratory Bangkok in order to collect reference samples, on site, at the mines for the GIA Origin related reference collection.

As usual just after or even during an expedition I post on facebook quite a lot of "Non Gemological" photos of these gemological expeditions:
In these facebook photos albums you will usually not find photos of gems or gem mines as these albums are more dedicated to the friends, famillies of the expedition members (I do my best not to travel alone) as most of them are not that much interested by gemstones but appreciate to be able to see what we have seen.

Usually we keep the photos of gems and of gem mining area for future publications, typically it will be first a short update about the situation at the mines for GNI meaning "Gem News International" in "Gems & Gemology" magazine. We want also to keep these photos unpublished for some presentations typically at the GIA Gemstones Gatherings, hosted each last wednesday of the month in Bangkok by GIA (Lab and school. See: http://www.giathai.net/news.php. Note: You are of course welcome to join one of these free events if you are around).

But of course these photos are not used exclusively for G&G and GIA events as I may also use them for other presentations and publications.

Finally later I usually post a selection of these photos to illustrate some blogs on http://www.fieldgemology.org.

So that's the system we are used to work with. Alberto told me that as all GO members are not in facebook he would appreciate if I could post here a kind of summary of these expedition for GO members to be able to access to these reports. So here it is:

Regarding specifically Sri Lanka, the author led an expedition to the Gem Island during spring 2011:

You will find the 'Non Gemological" photos of that expedition on facebook at the following link:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... 335&type=1

Then an update about sapphire mining in Sri Lanka was published in GIA e-briefs (June 2011)
https://app.e2ma.net/app/view:CampaignP ... 9#SriLanka

Then in the Autumn 2011 issue of "Gems & Gemology" you will find an update about sapphire mining in Sri Lanka in the GNI (Gem News International) part of the magazine:
http://www.gia.edu/research-resources/g ... index.html

Now later, there will be a blog about it on www.fieldgemology.org, but it is still a work under progress.

Hoping that you will find these links interesting.

All the best,
