Hello!

I am considering qualifying as a gemologist in the UK.

I would be a mature student- I’ve got a BA/MA in another field (humanities), but have recently relocated to the UK via marriage, and it won’t be possible to continue my old career here in the UK. I’m also the full-time carer of an 18 month old.

I have a European friend that’s in the business (but not located in the UK), that suggested doing a GEM-A.

I’ve spent a few months researching and it does look like something I’d be interested in. The problem is, which course?

Option 1 seems to be a full Gemmology Diploma, at a cost of about 8,000 GBP. This would make me an FGA.

Option 2 seems to be just doing diamonds, for a cost of about 4,000 GBP... making me a DGA.

Because my husband and I have a mortgage, we are tied to the greater London area (south). I imagine that the employment market here would be a lot of valuation and estate jewelry... if there’s a market at all for either qualification.

A Gemmology Diploma looks like about the same as full-time university does, thinking of pursuing Option 2, getting into the field and then working towards the greater qualification.

My husband is a geologist, so I’d have some help at home (much of the course is done via distance-learning), but still...

I’d greatly appreciate input from anyone who has UK knowledge.

It all depends on what you'd like to do.

Have you done research on what job opportunities are available for a DGA graduate? And the wages paid? Who is hiring?
I'd recommend that.

Contact some estate appraisers and ask them how they would advise you to proceed.

Good luck.
