For those who are Gem-A graduates: a specific group has been created on LinkedIn with job offers. There are a few at the moment — join the Gem-A Graduates Group to look at them.
Do I have to write a message to the group proving my FGA in some way, or does one of the group's admins have access to the database of graduate's names?
I have been somewhat critical about Gem-A's lack of careers support for three years now, but this seem to be movement in the right direction.
I remember back in 2009 getting a two-line reply from Gem-A about my job query, whereas GIA (with whom I had never studied, or given a penny to before) sent me piles ccc of contacts, advice and job links.
I was worried about this being a LinkedIn group, as to do many things on that website requires payment. However, this doesn't seem to be the case with this of group, and I can view the job list without restrictions.
Note: BTW thanks to the OP for the Solitaire internship memo. Unfortunately, it seems the position was filled in a matter of days.
It's not every day that a London-based paid (albeit only 6/hr) lab internship is offered, that merely requires GG/FGA (rather than hard core scientific academic qualifications), so I imagine they were swamped with applications.
Also, I finally found a 'job' in Bangkok (after 3 years of trying), only to find out it was 40 hr/week, completely unpaid and my own visas had to be covered (leaving the country and coming back repeatedly, basically).
That said, if the industry can't even accommodate Jason in America, we're probably all screwed, lol.
EDIT: Lol, the forum changed my 'h.a.r.d.c.o.r.e' to 'spammer'!
Cool, I need to test this:
watch your language, spam javelin, twat, tashmarine, spammer, beef curtains.... (by the way, the very bad c-word doesn't get filtered)

In Gem-A headquarters, they have bulletin boards up where they pin up job listings. Obviously, unless you make a point of going down to Hatton Gardens on a regular basis, you never see them. It's a good initiative to start posting them online. I have to wonder if they will start doing the same for jobs that must come in to their other large teaching centers worldwide.
Still this LinkedIn jobs list is rather short (only 3 jobs!), and not very confidence-boosting at the moment. I'm still of the opinion that the UK-based industry's employment outlook is something of a train-wreck with regards to supply-and-demand of graduates.
lilamande, have you heard of any British graduates have any luck in countries other than the UK?
I need a much larger pool to fish in, as I genuinely don't think I've seen more than 5 legitimate directly FGA-related opportunities advertised in the UK since I started with Gem-A in 2007.
On the other hand, I don't want to waste too much time on a lost-cause (as I suspect the USA is in terms of visas etc., despite the hundreds of vacancies advertised on GIA's website).
