Gem-A is developing the job service for its graduates through social networks as networking is one of the best way to find a job in this industry. Graduates can also directly exchange on it as well.
There should have more and more offers coming up, it is indeed at the moment a UK perspective, but surely, at some point there will have some offers overseas as well.

There is a listing of companies available at Gem-A now on request (information@gem-a.com).

Kyriakin, I actually know quiet a few people who graduated and travelled overseas for work. Some work near the mines, some in auctions, some as gems dealers...

A part from that networking might be one of the best ways to find a position in this industry, experience tends to show that graduates who target likely companies and actually call in to chat tend to get better results than just sending off CVs as it shows the right drive and confidence.

Another thing, the specialized "trade" jewellery magazines like "Retail Jeweller", "Jewellery Focus" et al have job offers in their classifieds.

Also Jewellery Stylist as well as Jackson Maine. They are both recruiting agencies in the industry.

I think I met someone from Jackson Maine back in '08. However, most of their positions always seemed to be high-end luxury sales, or technical jeweller jobs.

I couldn't say. But I do have a classmate who had been doing diamond grading for a different company in London that was hired by Graff via them. Not sure what she's doing for them though.

So how have people been getting on with these jobs?

Christie's Internship: Rejection, without interview.

Solitaire Lab: Position already filled, and then the advert reappeared (maybe the original chosen applicant could not take the job for whatever reason). Fresh recruiting process to start in the New Year.

Gubelin Hong Kong: Chose someone else.

Didn't bother with the rest, as they generally required experience, or were out of my range.

I have to say, it's better to have occasional jobs popping up for FGA grads (via this new group), and fail to get them, rather than there literally being none at all to apply for.

A quick note, a gemmo friend who heard about Jackson Maine here sent in their CV. They had a first interview with them, which has led to (so far) two interviews with potential employers. I won't give names, but "high end, none of us can afford them" type employers.

I was in contact with them back in 2008/2009. I remember Harrods being one of their clients.

Anyway, IIRC I applied to their retail/sales positions in London for a period of time, but got the knock-back due to "lack of experience in jewellery shops".

The fact that you can`t get experience in jewellery shops, because all jewellery shops require you to have experience in jewellery shops. It`s catch-22 until you find one who doesnt require any such experience.

What's happened with the Gem-A LinkedIn jobs list? I just checked, and it's completely empty at the moment.
