Once again a project that is not strictly speaking jewelry related, however it does include a geode slice :D

As I am now working remotely at home like many others, I have taken the opportunity of finishing up some ongoing woodworking projects during my lunch breaks. This is a coffee table I just finished up using a large (56"x53"x3") cookie slab of Parota. While in Tucson in 2019 I saw some tables in front of the Riverpark Inn/Pueblo/Ramada (or whatever it is called now) that gave me the idea of inlaying a slice of gem material into a table. The examples there used petrified wood and small wood segments around the stone. I figured that I could do the same with a single large slab and still charge a small fraction of the price.

Considering the translucency of the material, it occurred to me that I could also add lighting from underneath the geode slice as a bonus feature. I've used a small led light that is rechargeable using a small portable powerbank that is attached magnetically under the table and removable for other uses. The light has a small remote control and has 20+ colors along with different intensities and the ability to fade, strobe, etc. between them. I'm pretty happy with the results. Would love to hear any feedback or suggestions for future tables (I bought three more slices in Tucson this year for additional projects).

Amazing piece Paul. Very creative way to blend your amazing woodworking skills with gems and minerals.

After all the rare gem jewelry I have made my Wife over the years, she asked why I don't make cool things like this.

She is a Paul Mattlin Woodworking fan after the amazing cutting board he made for her.

Never a hero in you own house I guess....

Sorry Steve #-o

If it makes you feel any better, my wife rarely wears any of the jewelry I've made her over the years and is always asking me to build household items like garden boxes, storage cabinets, bookshelves, etc. instead of the more fun woodworking projects I make to gift or sell. My response that she can buy those things on Amazon gets the expected response

File comment: Rhodolite Silver Penta Petal Pendant
Fleur PetalCut.jpg
Fleur PetalCut.jpg [ 378.62 KiB | Viewed 4451 times ]
Nature inspired penta petal rhodolite flower in a leafy silver pendant. The five rhodolites have a softly curving crown with modified checkerboard facets, the silver leaves of the pendant textured with leafy veins. The gems are 72 degree calibre cut to make a nexus of 360 degrees.
Prongs are thus eliminated in the centre for uninterrupted color. Even peripheral prongs are kept to minimum visibility as the gems are custom cut to closely fit the mounts.

Very nice piece!

I get tired of just seeing the diamond halo rings that I make and repair all day...

A well executed color piece is a nice change!

Here's a variation with an added dimension, the petals are tilted to better resemble a blossoming flower. The mount is minimalist....say it with flowers. The rhodolites are larger with a more purplish red hue.

This design is much more challenging to execute because of the tilt, the gems have to meet seamlessly to minimise prongs as well as conceal the underlying precious metal.

This is outstanding! I really like the tilt of the petals; I think it adds so much dimensionality to the piece.

Four Leaf Clover inspired Quatrefoil pendant, 18K with four leaf-cut Peridots seamlessly converging to form perhaps one of the most ubiquitous motifs in the design world. The bail complements the Quatrefoil with a matching 3.5mm brilliant cut Peridot. The four peridots are precisely calibrated to support each other and eliminate prongs at the nexus.

 Technically the Alhambra architecture predates Messieurs by over a thousand years - the Quatrefoil shape goes as far back as Mayan Mesoamerica.
I will still respectfully refrain from usage of that term/association. Besides, the studded bail is a significant design departure.
