At its core, Gemology is the study and application of materials suitable for use in jewelry as gemstone, or other ornamental applications such as objects of art. The materials may be natural, synthetic, or imitation in origin.
Gemological work can range from research, teaching, writing, mining, cutting, growing synthetics, lab verification of identity, gemstone dealing, retail selling, appraising current or antique jewelry, or a combination of any of the above.
