That is sort of like asking what does a Doctor, Lawyer, or Engineer do. These are are big fields, requiring technical training and have many areas of specialty.

At its core, Gemology is the study and application of materials suitable for use in jewelry as gemstone, or other ornamental applications such as objects of art. The materials may be natural, synthetic, or imitation in origin.

Gemological work can range from research, teaching, writing, mining, cutting, growing synthetics, lab verification of identity, gemstone dealing, retail selling, appraising current or antique jewelry, or a combination of any of the above.

So, the question is Jenny, why were you interested in joining a forum discussing topics you seemingly knew nothing about?

Analogous to me joining a forum for professional Stunt Testers whose members eat live bugs or pond scum to test for possible toxicity.

This is a real question, Jenny. Looking forward to your response. :)

And rock lickers, lick rocks to test for desert fever or some ancient disease that is most likely not going to be Covid of any strain.
Like your question posed there, Barbra.

Cinnabar and arsenic come to mind. My father taught me to lick your finger then wet the rock with it. :)
