Hello
I need help identifying this piece of equipment. The person I bought it from didn’t have a clue either.
The two holes on either side line up perfectly with the tube in the middle. When looking through them. Also in inside of the unit is blacked out. It’s also completely air tight when the lid is on. All sealed etc. But why I do not know.

All I know about it is on the sticker itself.

Huddlestone Gemological Consultants?? Cannot find anything out about the company or it’s products.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Possibly for viewing and grading diamonds.

It is from roy huddlestone, you can read about him here:

https://issuu.com/jeweller/docs/jeweller_g_j__nov_2013_/98

According to P. G. Read he built a modified spectrometer (from the book gemmologicsl instruments)m
https://books.google.nl/books?id=CP3fBAAAQBAJ&pg=PA83&lpg=PA83&dq=huddlestone+colour+measuring+spectrometer&source=bl&ots=heKDA5_AG7&sig=ACfU3U0S67bFS94lYgN62rDEnFMaGDs86w&hl=nl&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwitk6um0O3yAhUWNuwKHRs6DaUQ6AF6BAgyEAM#v=onepage&q=huddlestone%20colour%20measuring%20spectrometer&f=false

(Hope this works, it is a link to google books)

I just googled it, but the black paint, the two holes etc looks like an add on for a spectrometer. Just guessing. Maybe the third connection was uesed to create a vacuum?

Looks like it may be a pressure/vacuum vessel for oiling Emeralds?

That is what I was going to guess too - oiling emeralds.

Do you think it is just part of the equipment. Every thing I found related to Roy Huddlestone and the EGL is related to diamonds. Is it possible it can be for fracture filling diamonds as well.

If in fact it is for some form of clarity enhancement it is missing a whole bunch of parts.

I have no idea what this particular piece of equipment is but I know Roy Huddlestone specializes (specialized?) in diamonds. I attended one of his seminars at a diamond conference years ago at which he displayed an amazing series of diamond inclusion images. The photography was incredible and while scientific it bordered on the realm of fine art. The images were beautiful.

After I posted just now I decided to do a search on Mr. Huddlestone. I believe an inquiry about this equipment can be sent to him directly since I'm pretty sure the same person is active on Facebook:

Every thing I found online pointed me to somewhat the same, he was very instrumental in the plotting and measuring of inclusions. But as well I also found a reference where his lab reported a parcels of emeralds as being fracture filled. So I went off into the Abyss of the unknown. A personal trip to the GIA library may reveal more info as well. It is a interest peaking piece that is for sure.

The hose coupling made me think of a way of putting oil (e.g.) into emeralds. The only other piece of equipment that I know of that uses a hose coupling is a kind of refractometer, which uses the hose to keep the temperature steady while measurements are being made.
