I'm a little late to the CFL discussion, but I can't resist comment. "So, Brian, tell us how you really feel..."

I think compact fluorescent lights are hideous bastardizations of the term "white light." Look at any of their visible spectra, or just look at them through a spectroscope. They are nothing but discrete lines arising from whatever pinch of metals put inside at a high pressure to try to broaden the linewidths a bit. The phosphorescent coatings on the glass add nothing to their light output; might as well be white paint. Whole bands of color are completely absent from their spectra.

When I hear the term CFL lighting, I think of motel rooms that haven't updated in a while.

I won't miss them overall, but nothing's better for yellow spodumene and hiddenite.

Somewhat related sidebar.
My mom used to say that we should only buy 60 watt incandescent bulbs because people look best when viewed under 60 watt incandescent bulbs.

I really can't distinguish most yellow-orange garnets but i've seen clean, saturated color stones which are really dazzling, whether they're being represented aa Malaya, spessartite, or Mandarin garnets. As for hessonite, I have a very clean stone that if opaque would be the color of polished metallic copper. it is really unique. A reported characteristic of hessonite I have observed in this stone is the "treacley" appearance under magnification. This is like what you see when you pour corn syrup (or treacle-molasses) into clean water and it refracts light to appear swirly until it is completely dissolved. By the way the garnet composition chart is a keeper- thanks!
