I hope you don't take this question too personal, but how much did you pay for the piece? If these are real transparent Cat's Eye Alex, the price would be in the stratosphere! I'm not saying that people don't get lucky & find a real treasure for nothing, but it would be like winning millions in a lottery, the odds are a billion to one.

sadly, but not surprisingly, it turns out that these are organic matter, likely black mother of pearl. Thanks to everyone for their help and interest!

Just proves you can't tell anything from a photo.....or even from subsequent verbal "clarification".

Frankly, without additional information, this "organic" identification is as meaningless as the one made by the "jeweler" who determined they were "antique" chrysoberyl.

How was this latest identification made?
Based on what? Hardness? Reaction to hydrochloric acid? Refractive Index?

What sort of shell?
What is causing the chatoyancy?

I'm with Barb - this doesn't hold much water yet either. That is certainly not anything that I would have thought at all. I would have said thermoplastic like the old costume pieces by Coro, Weiss and others before shell.

Here is an example of a Weiss thermoplastic piece - I 'borrowed' this from broadwaterrosejewels so I thank them! Check out the link below and look at the beautiful pieces there. All costume tho'...

For those that can't view the image, here is the direct link:

Just an update on this material.
It is indeed sillimanite. I was looking through my specimens and stumbled on some.

Sillimanite cats eyes are a classic (but minor) gem, but the stones in the OP don't look quite like it to me. The sheen isn't quite right.

Well, without being able to test them we are handicapped and are opinions are speculative.
Maybe the original poster will send something to us.
Geeze....that could have been done from the onset. #-o

Im a bit late, just saw this. My mom bought a silver muff chain in london in the 1980’s. Said to be Victorian . Same stuff same settings. Black mother of pearl cut in a high dome. When you have it in your hand it is a sight id. Neat effect.
