How would you differentiate hiddenite from a green beryl....?

Specific gravity and refractive index seem like good starts. It's not too often that they'd get mixed up. Quick and dirty, hiddenite's color gets much more intense under a cfl bulb which green beryl probably will not.

No special challenges for this separation. The standard gemological test will easily separate these.

If do not possess the knowledge and or have the appropriate gemological testing equipment a easy answer is take it to a qualified lab or gemologist for analysis. Or post some of your test results, possibly some images of your two gems here, many here are extremely qualified and truthfully these two species are worlds apart, other than both being a shade of green.

the shape of the two is very different, too, usually. While it isn't a deterministic test, usually a quick glance can tell the difference between the two.
