The item has now been safely returned, and paypal have said they will refund.

Thank you to Barbra for the advice!

My pleasure.
I'm at that age where I don't take kindly to be taken advantage of, nor hearing reports of others being abused by fraudsters. :D

As soon as you have your refund in hand, blast that seller with an honest review.

I buy many things on EBAY with paypal. Had one bad item in 18 years. I am a prompt payer. I also think you should inform the FTC [Federal Trade Commission] to report your case and resolution. Ebay needs to be aware of a possible audit if they do not police fraud in interstate commerce. You could even request the offender to be barred from EBAY commerce. Or put on notice that further complaints will suspend their access. G>O> has a section about This is not LEGAL advice only steps I took years ago to inform both EBAY and PAYPAL of fraud. I had to include my account number in my complaint. If the purchase is several hundred dollars it may be a felony? I am glad you turned to G.O. It is a hassle, but reporting crime means that we can promote honesty and fair play if we are watchful. EBAY appreciated my action. G.O. appreciates your heads up. Thank you for your courage, because markets are only a good as their users. w
