Crater agate
Crater agate is found in a small deposit about 10 kilometers North-West of the little town named Las Plumas, in Chubut Province, Argentina. The agate is form in nodules with very rough skin in black or dark brown color. 90% of the specimens shows a remarkable red botryoidal center, surrounded by smoked color chalcedony layer with different thickness. The red botryoidal center is the remains of Hematite layer that over time oxidized and created a coating of jasper. Under UV light short wave this agate is green color fluorescent because the material was in contact with Uranium salt. The nodules are laying buried in the decompose host rock: Basalt. The age of the Crater agate is Tertiary, (30 MYO) This agate was found, named and introduce in 1997 to the market by Luis de los Santos.
