I bought a string of pearls with, what I was told, an 18K gold claps. And it tested as 18K. It is marked 765 (and the swedish hallmark for imported precious metal). However, 765 is a purity mark I haven't seen before. I tried to find information on this. All I found was a remark in the description of another peice of jewelry marked 765. It stated that this purity mark was used up until 1913. Is this correct?
I'm hoping someone might know something about this purity mark, when was it used and where?
Hmmm... looks like a purity mark, which would mean .765 pure. that is higher than 18k, if true. Find a person who buys gold who has an XRF machine and they can tell you the exact purity very quickly.
However, I'm not sure the exact purity of the gold can help me figur out when and where it was made. Can it?
The reason for my question is, as you might have guessed, trying to date the pearls. I know pearls can be difficult to identify and that cultured pearls are less common in jewelry made before 1920. All I know for sure is that it was imported after 1913 when the oval hallmark was introduced.
(This, of course, assuming the claps is original to the pearls. But it's a start)
