"Transferring Your Files by USB

If you use a micro-usb cable and connect it to your computer, you can transfer files to and from your Kindle just like it was an external hard drive. Place any .mobi files in the Books folder, and place .pdf and other formats in the Documents folder. Once you've added your files, you may need to restart the Kindle to get it to recognize your new books."

I think the simplest way to get the book on your Kindle is described by the above paragraph in the article on that web site. No need to go through Amazon with new accounts, etc. Disregard the mention of the pdf files and Documents folder. Just copy the Mobi file from the DVD on your computer directly to your Books folder on the Kindle.

The only thing about which I am not certain is whether you need the Mobi flowing page file or the Mobi fixed page file. Both are on the deluxe DVD. I'm afraid you will have to try one first then delete it if the book looks whacky when opened. I would start with the Mobi fixed page version first.

All righty, then :) . I've learned a few things, including the fact that the USB cable I use to re-charge my Kindle can also be used to download from my computer.

I have requested info regarding the flowing file or fixed file from Amazon. As soon as I know which to use, I shall purchase the book.

As I previously mentioned, the deluxe DVD contains all available file formats so you will have both the flowing and fixed page versions. If Amazon does not provide a satisfactory answer you can just figure it out by trial and error. The one that doesn't work can just be deleted.

Barbara, go with the $49 option so you can have the option of using it with your comp or with your Kindle. You will probably prefer the scale on the computer monitor.

Got it yesterday and had a h.ll of a problem to get it into my iPad, I really really really hate iTunes!
Now it´s on my working computer (PC) and on my iPad and it works SO nice! You just HAVE to love it!
Awesome! Actually I think I don´t need anything more, even though I love books... (I do have a few...)
Do buy it, it´s worth every penny!

Thank you for the kind words Lennie and I'm glad you're enjoying the book. I know how confusing iTunes can be. I think they are trying to make things more automated, such as the default settings syncing your mobile device immediately when it is plugged in. On the other hand there are so many choices of features that can be turned off or on that it can be daunting to be sure if you've made the right choices.

Maybe I shouldn't say that, being one of the contributors, but... IT'S A GREAT BOOK! :D
Congrats Geoffrey and Tino!

I totally switched to ebooks a couple of years ago and I only see benefits of it.
The same 600+ pages book with full color photos would probably cost some $300 and wouldn't be so portable.
Also, the possibility to upgarde the contents to registred users is VERY important, in so changing world as modern gemology!
Well done guys! =D> =D> =D>

All righty! The DVD arrived and I have it in my computer's "cup holder" 8) .

What I've seen so far I like! However, there is one question that I know is a dumb question (I've asked many, so I know a dumb question when I ask one  ): Am I supposed to just use this from the DVD, or am I supposed to load it onto my laptop? I see that there is an .exe file; do I just "run" that file if I'm to load it on the computer? (Dumb question #528.)

Next, I will attempt to download it to my Kindle [-o< .

Hi Barbara.
You can do either.
Download it on your comp OR use it directly from the disc.
:D

Yes, as Barbra said you can use it either way but I highly recommend that you copy the .exe file into a folder on your hard drive, possibly your Documents folder. If you plan to use it frequently put a shortcut to that file on your desktop.

The reasons it's best to copy the file to your computer's hard drive are that it loads faster when you launch it and it will respond faster and more smoothly than being read directly from the DVD. Also, in my experience DVD/CD drives tend to break down more often than hard drives so I tend not to make them work continuously whenever possible.

Thank you for your purchase of the book. I hope you enjoy it.

Successfully loaded the program to my laptop :D .

As to the Kindle, I guess I expected this to work as any other book on Kindle, but it doesn't. There is no ability to zoom in, to bookmark, to change font size, etc. I loaded both the flowing and the fixed versions and I see no difference between them. Could just be me, though :smt102 ... I am technology challenged.

Still, it will be great to have this book "on the go" :D .

I'm sorry to hear that you're having difficulty with the Kindle version of the book. I will look into it and get back to you. Can you please give me the details of your Kindle, such as the size, model and software version?

I just wanted to keep readers of this thread apprised of the situation with our e-book's functionality on the Kindle. There is lots of activity in the e-publishing community regarding readability and functionality of the various file types on various e-readers. Most notable of those issues is the Kindle which was originally designed by Amazon to exclusively read books sold on their own web site.

The e-book field has matured enough now that this cross-platform problem is being seriously addressed with several solutions. We are confident that we will shortly be presenting Kindle users with working solutions so that readers in Barbara's position can use their Kindles with the full functionality intended for The Handbook of Gemmology.

At the moment Barbara is the only user who has presented us with a Kindle problem. We thank Barbara, and any others from whom we have not heard, for their patience as we find the best and easiest solution for reading our book on the Kindle.
