Hello everyone,

Let me introduce you to http://www.gemmo.eu. This friendly gemstone database has been written in french but please do use the Google translation menu at the top to have it in your own language (although the output is slightly different from the original and not the best).

I started to write this DB in 2006. It has been released on the web in 2012 (I'm not fast & furious!). All of the basic gemology data are listed. They have NOT been copied/pasted from the web. They all come from SERIOUS sources such as G&G, JofG, AG, AFG, etc.
Click here to view the listing output with the 500+ gemstones:

78 factsheets have been written so far. There are many left to come… Here is for example the big factsheet about OPAL:
http://www.gemmo.eu/fr/opale.php

After you are logged in (free) you will be able to view all the photos of the base, make advanced search and sort out the results occurring to anyone of the 26 different listing columns. The purpose of this DB is to get useful and immediate help to identify a gemstone after you have measured a refractive index and/or a specific gravity and/or a Mohs hardness, etc. This is also what does http://www.Geminterest.com to some extent, the other DB that I bought back in 2012. Sometimes in the future both DB will be merged into one single DB.

At this point, I would be very interested to have your feedback about http://www.Gemmo.eu. Do you find it useful? How can it be improved?

Now about the Gemmo.eu iPhone app… It doesn't exist yet but if someone is willing to create it then I think that many gemologists will appreciate that! The purpose is to get help when we need to identify a gemstone in a remote location without any internet access or just to have the basic gem data handy at any time in the pocket instead of having to carry a heavy Webster or Schumann book.

First download the following XLS file coming from the Gemmo.eu listing (sorry it's in french but 90% of the gem names are the same in english. I can have it in english later if badly needed):
http://www.gemmo.eu/table/Gemmo-eu-FR.xls

I tried several free iPhone apps that could open this XLS file (via iTunes) and I got the best results with OFFICE SUITE PRO.
CALC XLS FREE, CALC LITE and OFFICE2 PLUS also give acceptable results but none of them can sort columns unless you pay $4.99. Has anyone experienced some better app out there? Any good hint?

I'll be very interested to read all your comments and so on!
