It is with great sadness I'd like to announce Dr. Hanneman passed away on December 12, 2020. His legacy will live on forever!

I was looking at some of my sunstones. Here are 2 that photographed well.

The left hand one has long flat crystals, the right hand one has flat plates. The sparkly photos are reflected light.

Same stone with transmitted light shows the plates without sparkle

Are you sure the form of the plates is not different primarily because of face up orientation of the stones?

Yes I'm sure, that's what's interesting about the stones. The first stone has these long thin ribbon which terminate at the edge of the stone as very thin rectangles, almost lines. I tried to take an image from the side. You can see one line almost dead centre but the whole image is full of them. I tried to magnify the image but focus is tricky on the curved side.
I bought them on ebay years ago. This stone alledgedly comes from "Africa" while the sparkly one comes from "India". Different dealers.

Yeah the Indian one looks like it might be "confetti" sunstone.

I also have some of the African sunstone rough which is identical to your posted cabochon with the long slender platelets. I know it is African as the miner from which I got it mined in the Tanzania areas back in the day. Your other appears similar to Oregon Sunstone.

Off topic of Sunstone but about the "Confetti" there is also a grade of Gem Silica that is littered with inclusions that is also been given the name Confetti Gem Silica (nothing official that I know off). The inclusions are small platelets of powder blue Chrysocolla, light green Malachite.
