I have this very nice lot of pezzottaite specimens in hand which I need to decide if I will purchase. Just wanted some views of experts. Ive had around a couple of hundred carats of the stuff pass through my hands the last few years but not seen these kind of sizes.
Obviously terrible cutting.
The largest, triangle shape is 17ct and opaque, the reddish piece next to it is 7ct for weight reference and good transparency although obviously included as allot of this stuff is.
Really nice range of colours. My concerns -
Are these on the rarer side of rare due to size and colour? What kind of retail carat price would these actually realise?
Just want to make sure the math is sound before pulling the trigger. Many thanks
Thanks Barbra, that was also my first thought. I would get lab tests and certs naturally at this cost, be daft not to. AIGS or GIA are my options. But the price is quite steep on the lot so I may not ever know.
But, Im still going to ask you, even though I know I shouldnt just assuming this is a lot of pezzottaite, what are your thoughts on the pieces? Would they be of any significance?
It is unfortunate that most big pezzotaites seem to have a large amount of inclusions. I have a few. It is a shame, because clean ones can be very pretty. Usually I would say that you should go with your gut feel for if the stones are pretty. none of the large ones would meet that criteria for me. There is a small one in the background that would.
Given the mindat gallery, it's difficult to imagine what a clean pezzotaite would look like, but a lot of these photos seem to have aligned inclusions that would be suitable for catseye cabochons.
Looking on google, they also seem to be a lot more commonly cut in that fashion.
