New to the Forum or The Quiet Type

Location: Desert SW, USA
I'm an older retired software engineer. I've had a lifelong interest in Geology but never had more than an introductory course or two at the university, way back in 1969, when the Theory of Plate Tectonics was only a couple of years old. Over the intervening years I've accumulated an extensive rock and mineral collection but, I'm ashamed to say, mostly via purchases. I've never done any lapidary or gem work.

Well, anyhow, hello to all and I hope you don't get too upset at my dumb questions.
