Hi,
I'm headed to Chiang Mai soon and would like to look for some loose stones. The gem scam in Thailand is infamous and determining a good-quality fake is beyond my ability, so I've been trying to do some due diligence online before deciding whether or not purchasing stones there is worth the risk. One name that kept coming up in travel forums is Shiraz Jewelry, does anyone know anything about them?
Also, would anyone happen to know if it's acceptable buying practice to walk into a store in Thailand, request that a stone be certified and only purchase if the certification confirms that the stone is not a fake? Am I expected to pay for the certification regardless?
If anyone has any recommendations for trustworthy jewelers that would also be appreciated.

iserae, you have just nailed the answer to your own question! If it is beyond you to determine a "fakie" in Thailand, what makes you think there is any difference in Chiang Mai? Certificate? Anybody with a laser printer can design, and produce a cert for you, and I imagine you are buying stones worth $100's, rather than $1,000's, so of course there is no genuine certificate for a $90 gem.
