Chanthaburi - Market Part 1

I am Gerry from Sun city AZ. I just got into Lap/Gemology I have been grinding Cabochons for a very short time with 0 practical knowledge
about Gems. I normally spend 6 months in Thailand every year.

Well I spent 2 Days at the Chanthaburi GEM Market, What a blast 100;s of tables 100's of runners/Sellers and Zillions in Gems.
It was a bit depressing to think I couldnt participate in this process because I was a newbie.

I got a very busy US Guy some cold water and he let me sit at his table as he was buying and even told me why he didnt buy when he though it would make sense to me. I met his broker and got a card so I will have a place to buy when I am ready.

I walked the streets about 4 sq blocks that I found Offices and open air setups with people buying and selling. Ruby is King Sapphire is queen with other gems holding court. I sat with people and watched them, found 3 places to buy tools and I could have open a lab with the quality of equipment they have.

Food and Cold drinks everywhere with Thai spicy aroma ever present.

I did buy some stuff though I bought some rough to Cab with I went to the Bargain table and bought about $125 in Rocks Well within my budget. The result is I learned a few things about Rubys and some other info on What the different rough can look like with for about 20 or so Gems. Yesterday I was reading and today I was touching. WOW I wish I knew this 13 years ago I would have learned Thai.

Anybody wants questions answered I will do my best. I walked everywhere and got lost a lot.

Gerry

Later I will list what I bought and ask for feedback.

I'm glad to hear you kept your head (and money) and had a great time. I'd love to go there myself sometime. That said, I for one would really like to see some photos of what you bought.

List

First I had no real knowledge of what things looked like but after listening and asking what was this and that I got to my list. Remember most dont speak any english

I dont have a clue what it really is but I'm learning. Most of my buys were cab stone grade rough just for Cabs.

I bought a light for 3 bucks and tried to shine it on all the rough, a lesson in itself.

I'm going to list the stuff I bought with the weight I have a 650 GM limit on my

2 pieces Opal looks like 1 possible stone but a nice rock to slice both over 600 grams

1 pc white quartz over 600 gms. might be over a kilo

3 pieces of pinkish Ruby Some said African 127 , 91.4 , 96 gms

1 piece Garnet blueish purp 45 gms

4 pc kyolyte 166 gms , 64 gms , 84 gms , 64 cts easy to identify

3 pc citrine can make a facet stone or 2 when I take that class off color 2/40 gms 22.5 cts

2 piece of white topaz 14.5 cts 17 cts

1 tiger eye finished 43 cts

1 chalcedony 34.5 cts might be able to make a tricolor cab

1 blue sapphire 41 cts

2 piece red ruby 44 cts , 26 cts

2 apatite 15 cts, 20 cts

1 iolite 10 cts.

rose quarts 36.5 cts

1 pinkish ruby - not like the other pieces of PR 15.5 cts

spessatite 15.5 cts

2 pieces of quarts that could make facet grade when I learn to do that.
