So it looks pretty easy to fake. Just get some of the dna off an "ethically mined" emerald, replicate it and then put it on non-ethically mined gemstones. Or am I missing something?

If they are up to date on DNA, they probably realize that there are now 2 synthetic DNA bases besides the ATCG learned in school. The extra 2 can only be produced by organisms that are "fed" the synthetics in the lab, but once made, the DNA is intended to produce (ATCGXY) coding for the synthesis of semisynthetic or synthetic proteins for various medical drugs and enzyme usage. The 4 base system can code a max of 64 3-Letter combos whereas the 2 extras can allow coding for 256. With the normal 4 letter coding, it would be fairly easy to replicate the codes in the emerald, as it use normal biologicals, but an individuals would have to go to great expense to duplicate Scripps Research Institute's system for the X and Y, so in a way it would be a digital key. The institute has the responsibility not to allow the altered organisms to leave , but if they were stolen, they would have to have the X,Y, components and the synthetic enzymes in their diet to reproduce.
