Dear Guys,

Beside using a loupe, is there any way to identify the corundum family? (synthetic, treated and real). Is it possible? I know it is not so straight forward and one have to undergo a series of test before the conclusion can be made. But for me, I am happy with a 70 ~ 80% of accuracy. Will UV-VIS-NIR, FTIR or raman show anything? Thank you.

Regards,
zen

Why even bother with that "accuracy"? For me it would be like hitting within 20-30 yards when shooting at a Moose, at 100 yards... (I'm a keen believer in 0.5 (or less) MOA rifles)

Try scratching it. Not many minerals have a Mohs hardness of 9.
