Post subject: Ideas to the possible value of this large Emerald?
PostPosted: Sun Mar 12, 2023 1:49 pm
Looking for someone that can tell me an approx. value of this 3960 ct. Emerald from Brazil. It measures 138 x 87 x 49 mm's and is opaque in clarity, oval facet cut, color enhanced. It has been Cert. by GRS labs (which I verified and found the cert. #). It's the largest one so far I've seen and had. Got it from a seller in India that has a good reputation selling these along with great prices also. Ideas to what something this large would be worth? or the value of this? Thanks..

This isn't a gem. Perhaps an eccentric doorstop at best.
Whatever you paid for it was too much, IMO.

How much it is worth in what market. I would say give or take $100 USD, the report adds nothing, it looks dyed. It is not anything all that rare and most likely not Brazilian but Indian not that it matters much. The cutting, polishing and the material give it the only real value. I have seen these come in where a report and a generic valuation appraisal is stated in the 100's of thousands of USD.
I am posting a picture of a large beryl crystal we have had in the store for quite a while that was purchased as rough for cutting, it measures about 10"x6"x4" and weighs about 3-4kgs. Sorry to be the bearer of potentially disheartening news. I agree with Barbra also a nice paperweight for the desk and using nice generously.

These types of scam stones come up all too frequently.

This one has a known and verified value to the seller you purchased it from. To him, it was worth exactly what he was able to scam you out of. The value to you is exactly zero until you can find a bigger fool than you to scam sell it to.

Does that sound harsh? Good it is meant to be.

this is not an emerald, it's dyed beryl which is typical scam that has been around. that Indian Lab is using GRS Name fraudulently. (the real GRS Lab is https://www.gemresearch.ch/ )

We have angered Chipper1958 and he will no longer be joining this discussion or any others on this platform.
BANNED.
He can not accept that he made a very unsound buy and believes we treated him rudely and disrespectfully.
One thing I can say about this site, we do not tolerate fools.
Good riddance.

Often these aren't even beryl.

I just stopped someone from buying one like this and a ruby and sapphire stone. They actually tested as beryl and corundum based on the RI but one look and you can see they were heavily dyed. The one that was being pictured here looks almost identical to the one that I tested and I know they were still trying to sell it. I'd almost be curious if they picked it up in the Toronto area where the sellers were operating out of.

That said, I agree that it's definitely a fake and worth nothing except as a door stop.

They often pass through the traveling auction gigs or weekend liquidation setups. Often with dubious certs and appraisals with unfounded values for deception. Had one a few months back where it was claimed they got it for 5k at a esteem auction. You even have to take that with a grain of salt as to be true.
