Price in Europe: ~12'000 USD (DRIFT, PC included).
You will get working unite with basic functions with rang 400-7800 cm-1 You will miss: MAGI aplication and libraries, resolution 0,9 cm-1, but usually you could work ar 8 cm-1 without any problems.

Hey Peters,
is the DRIFT module of the Shimadzu adjustable in height? i did not find any detailed info, only the small photo on their website from which i can say ...i dont think so. .....this would avoid testing mounted stuff and of course would even require to purhcase the specular reflectance module as optional...........
Shimadzu DRIFT unite has a simple screw to adjust focal plane, nothing fancy and not very convenient... Very, very basic unit, it's works fine if you should measure up to 10 CT cut stone table down.
But and most important, you will miss any library, nothing similar to GemmoFTIR. Any identification or interpretation will be an owner. Also it has limited compensation of tempreture, unite don't like high enviroment temprature...
I am curious as to what FTIR adds to a Raman. Theoretically, they are both measuring exactly the same thing, I think - the resonance frequencies of the crystal when excited by photons. I have a picture in a book on FTIR and Raman that shows them on the same scale - the peaks /absorption have different amplitudes, but they are in exactly the same spots. I suppose that some of the frequencies "show up" more with one or the other - and of course you don't have the fluorescence to worry about.
I haven't started playing with my FTIRs yet, but I plan to. I have heard that FTIR is "better" than Raman - except for the paucity of libraries for it.
a little more research indicates that while that is true for crystals - FTIR is mostly useful for non-amorphous stuff. Like treatments. (Also apparently for different types of diamonds.)
