As I wrote in my earlier post, the Gemworld Guide lists about 6200K as the color temperature for judging colored stones. The bulb I sourced, at 6K, is pretty close to that, so I assume it would be a pretty good match for judging color. I think the overhead fluorescent on the Gemolite is also at a daylight temperature and is specifically for judging color grades in colorless diamonds...

As I said earlier, I don't know how close to a continuous spectrum the LED bulb comes, but I didn't see any color shifts in the stones I examined. In these days of multiple light sources, I think it's always a good idea to look at a colored stone under a variety of light sources and to take the stone outside or to the window to see what it looks like in "real" daylight for critical work.

Thanks a lot royjohn! I'm gonna try it; seems like an easy potential upgrade! Best wishes.

A 6000K LED lamp provides a continuous spectrum across the visible range. Typically there is a prominent blue peak in the spectrum, but otherwise it is a good mimic of daylight.
