We're getting a lot of slag glass posted lately. My vote goes to slag.

Why is your specimen magnetic?
Slag is a by-product left over after a metal has been separated (smelted) from its raw ore.
Slag is usually a mixture of metal oxides and silicon dioxide.

Yeah, I'm afraid when someone finds something huge, gemmy and rich blue it's always slag.
Slaggity slag, wonderful slag.

I would like to know what the hardness of the slag is and whether it breaks when it is hammered

Ahmad4, a diamond can break if you hammer it.
Not a good way to determine hardness.

Perhaps a pocket knife would be a better choice.

Yes, he scratches the knife, so the knife is not harder than the knife

I think you may mean the knife is not harder than your unknown.

Yes, this is what I meant. The stone is more solid than the knife

Fiberglass can be tough but never nearly that hard. Some specialty ceramics could be but nothing big blue and transparent.

It is a stone that does not seem man-made, solid and heavy, like other stones
