My friend found it in the ground with kind of a black shiny shell on it , I am posting more pictures, she went back later and found similar pieces & some that look like Amber in the same area. But the piece I posted first & the others that are similar in color are extremely hard & heavy .They scratch glass but can only be scratched by a diamond tip dremel bit. They were close to a small man made lake & also about 12 miles from an extinct volcano, not sure if that matters but thought it might be worth mentioning?
The first photos have a bit of ambiguity. The second set are definitely pictures of glass, no need for additional testing even. There's enough contextual information along with the photos to make the call certain enough I think.

Thanks to everyone for helping identify these !! That was actually my next question , natural or man made ? They vary so much in size & a little in color. One piece I haven't posted pics of yet but am attaching now ,my friend assumed was amber but now I'm wondering if it's glass too ?? Same location , similar in color.

That was my point, not simply glass but manmade glass verses obsidian. We who know or have experience know the difference. Truthfully looking at the last pic of the original post, to me looks very much like a lot of obsidian I have worked. But again pictures can be deceptive.

Fair point, and it's easy to forget but important to mention.
