Performing Appraisal Work

Hi All,

I am a recently graduated GG and AJP from GIA and I am interested in performing appraisal work. In addition to my GIA qualifications, I have been in the international gem trade (mostly colored stones and natural pearls) for about 7 years now. I have also dealt with antique and estate jewelry along the way, and occasionally, sculptures as well. I also perform custom fine jewelry design work and manage all the stone sourcing for those projects.

I know that there is no legal requirement regarding certification to perform jewelry appraisals in the USA, but I also know about NAJA and the other appraisal organizations, and the high regard for their certifications.

I want to know if it is feasible for me to successfully offer appraisal services without being a certified member of one of the appraisal organizations, relying only on my current skills and experience, or if I should really take the time to go through NAJA or one of the others?

Please advise and share your experiences.

My advice, pass on anything you do not feel confident about. Our society is litigious. You don't need the grief.

The best appraisers I know have been doing it for years with no formal certification behind them. They learn by looking at thousands of pieces and that can't be taught by any formal organization. Certainly best to start with a mentor if possible.

Essentially any and all educational credentials will provide great customer confidence. All hands on experience is big plus to provide yourself with confidence in your calls.

Not to mention (oops I'm mentioning it), many insurance companies will not accept reports from those without credentials or which are not USPAP compliant. Also even when a document is accepted, may insurers reserve the right to deny claims if the appraisals are lacking.
