Chelsea Filter Reactions
compiled by Cheryl Castner

The Chelsea Filter is a tool that helps confirm what something is NOT. It can not identify what something is. Use it with reservation, as all reactions should be confirmed with other more reliable gem identification instruments.

I studied several pieces of fluorite and found the the more pure green fluorites tend to either go clear or very faint pink, if the fluorites have any of whatever the impurities are that cause it to lean towards the dark green (blue) or blue are the ones that tend to have the strongest red reaction like a Columbian emerald also fluorite can have three phase inclusions like an emerald so a Chelsea is not diagnostic for fluorite.

The following books are my recommendations for further study.
They are some of the best available.
