Very funny, MoDo.
I'm serious that was very funny.

Truth be told, these courses are an outstanding opportunity to have a university level introduction into gemology as it is taught in the Earth Sciences Department.

Special thanks to Dr. Barbara Smigel for making her exceptional class available to all!

Thanks Modo :)

But I have never been away from the forum ...I usually am in bed when I read the forum and well it's harder to type, so I mostly lurk. There have not been very many posts that I have missed. :D

I have to pipe up every once in awhile just to show I am still here!

Okay, now that I've done more than just a "quick-see" peek at the two links, I definitely recommend Dr. Smigel's site! Clear; informative; great photos ... and  it's free!!! :smt042

The UC Berkeley site is rather dull, but I guess I wouldn't expect anything different from Berkeley  ... but, hey, it's free :P .

We love you, Cat! :smt039

I think the Socrates site has lots of good info; especially the video clips.
Berkeley may be many things, but dull is not one of them.

This is the lecture notes for finding optic sign and interference figure in minerals.
Would this material be useful?

That is great, Mr. Dirt.
A little advanced, but excellent information.

It's more advanced than I am, I keep thinking if I read it enough times I might understand it.

Yeow! This is the level of Doos and Frank and several other of the Scientific types... I am in the "Gee don't them purty rocks sparkle purty!" class and I think I am alone in the class room

but it's an interesting site... I like the little movies in the Berkley course..

We Love you too MoDo!! :smt060 :smt039

It really is a simple procedure once you know how and have the right tools (less than $10.00 if need be).
I use it a lot and can determine optical sign in 100% of all uniaxial stones I tried .. biaxials are about 30% now, but I expect that to increase with more practise.
Dr. Hanneman commented that the technique is not idiot proof. Which means that you can easily learn it if you are interested, not if you're not.

The nice thing is that it works on rough material aswell and I am investigating if it works on inclusions.
I tried it with cylophane that I got from the florist (the transparent plastic they wrap the flowers in) and it works like a charm. So guys, now you have a legimate excuse to come home with some flowers for once.

There is also some interesting info online from the U of Texas gemology courses too, including old exams with the answers:

http://www.geo.utexas.edu/courses/347k/

It's kind of amazing just how much information you can find once you start digging deeply into the dark corners of the internet.
