Wow! Barbra -- I just did a quick-see look through the new links to the Free Online Gemology Courses you've posted! These are wonderful! Thanks for putting them up . I believe anyone who uses these links will get much more than they pay for!
It really is a simple procedure once you know how and have the right tools (less than $10.00 if need be).
I use it a lot and can determine optical sign in 100% of all uniaxial stones I tried .. biaxials are about 30% now, but I expect that to increase with more practise.
Dr. Hanneman commented that the technique is not idiot proof. Which means that you can easily learn it if you are interested, not if you're not.
The nice thing is that it works on rough material aswell and I am investigating if it works on inclusions.
I tried it with cylophane that I got from the florist (the transparent plastic they wrap the flowers in) and it works like a charm. So guys, now you have a legimate excuse to come home with some flowers for once.
