GIA Alumni Golden Gate Chapter
(The “Hands-on” Chapter)
Presents…

Chronicles from Gems & Gemology:
The Bizarre, the Unusual, and the Interesting

with
Brendan Laurs, GIA

Hibonite, hanksite, alabaster and many other gemological oddities have crossed paths with, G&G's editor Brendan Laurs. Glass sporting remarkably natural-looking inclusions, "Nano-gems", gemstone tapestries, and "gem" materials that only a chosen few have a chance to encounter and analyze will make for a fascinating evening highlighting the wonders of gems and science.

Brendan Laurs (M.S., G.G.) is interim editor-in-chief of Gems & Gemology at GIA. His interests in the formation of gemstone deposits led to a job as an exploration geologist before joining GIA in 1997. Brendan's extensive travel and research are revealed in his co-authored 2010, G&G article "Gem Localities of the 2000s" as well as many other articles in the award winning publication. In 2006, he co-chaired GIA's first-ever Gemological Research Conferenc in San Diego, and he's co-chairing the research track of the upcoming GIA Symposium 2011 in Carlsbad.
A frequent traveler to global gem sources, Laurs has published numerous articles and spoken at technical conferences and gem and mineral gatherings.

It might be fun to start a GO thread on "weird and and wonderful *gems* I have been asked to identify." Don't know if this is quite the right place to launch the - what would you call it, "challenge," "invitation"?? Barbara? What say you?

My own catalogue of supposed gems includes a sugar cube size alum crystal a lady's grandfather "brought back from Europe"; blue crystals also passed down as a family heirloom that turned out to be copper sulphate; a lump of fuzed green bubble-filled bottle glass as big as a golf ball brought back from Afghanistan under the guise of being a rough emerald; a faceted honey brown oval "golden citrine" the size of half a hen's egg, bought on a cruise for 800$ (doesn't the heart just sink when you hear that word "cruise"??) which turned out to be plastic... and a few more along the same lines.

Anyone else care to contribute some of your own weird and wonderful non-gem gem stories?

Cheers,
Hans Durstling
