We have that same crud down here even in our rural water. It's TERRIBLE and you're right, hard on fixtures. The absolute best thing that I have found to clean it off mine is the Dollar General brand of Toilet bowl cleaner. Not the brand ones and not some other store brand...THAT one. DON'T leave it on long, just for 30-60 seconds then wipe off what that's taken off...then again...until it slowly breaks it down. It will eventually start coming off in larger flakes.
Have been fighting this same thing for 11 years and have tried about everything. Lemon/citric acid will usually work but not quickly and not without elbow grease added to it. My faucets are heavy chrome - it says not to use it but it's either clean faucets/handles/everything else that water runs in or look at that layer of built up white crap.
After a overnight 8+ hour wrapped with soaked in lemon juice paper towel, almost all of the crust came off with a little scraping/scrubbing. Citric acid works but not real fast and not just wipe off sparkly.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
These cool fixtures are for looking at when new or clean, but use them and its Major upkeep.
