How about almost 65cts of NC emerald.

It's huge but a strange looking cut to me. Still who wouldn't mind finding something like that monster.

Yahoo! has some more images (including the original rough) & a larger article here:

As a rockhound, I'm amazed at that crystal. Finding anything like that would be bragging rights for a couple lifetimes.

But as an emerald, I'm not that impressed. This quote is telling:

Quote:
"It was so dark in color that holding it up to the sun you couldn't even get the light to come through it," a quality that ensured an intense green hue once the stone was cut with facets that allowed light into the gem's core, Ledford said.

Still, it's some great green from NC & I would be making big deal of it if it were mine too! ;-)

It's unimaginable, to me, that the owners of that rough would let just "anyone" whack away at it. I love picking rocks (though still a novice), but if I found anything 1% as cool as that crystal I would really check out a cutter's credentials before I'D turn it over. Maybe the photos are bad (optimistic)

According to this article, what we're seeing is already a recut. http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/08/27/1646044/nc-farm-yields-record-emerald.html I would hate to see the first cut.

As a newbie faceter who has watched many stones shrink as I chased out my mistakes, I felt a little sick when I read that they had to cut it twice.
