Ok. I remember there being a big complaint about using the term "zultanite" for Turkish diaspore, but when the hell did they switch names from zultanite, back to Turkish diaspore, and then again to czarite?

Seriously, my brain is going to explode from crappy trade names. Although I've gotta say I like the name zultanite better than czarite...

I'm fond of "Turkish Diaspore"

"Czars" and "Sultans" derivations are the natural evolution of the old (and still actual) "Imperial" marketing trick, I guess...

Or maybe it's because the most important color-change gem - alexandrite - takes its name from the czar Alexander II?... :D

"Turkish diaspore" isn't enough IMHO, probably not all diaspore from Turkey may have color-change effect, so some special name for such gem variety could be useful. And also maybe in future it can be found in other countries...
Zultanite was ok but it looks like its use is complicated due to purely commercial issues like registered marks and so...

Many varieties of gems are color change.....
garnets
sapphires
fluorite
Should the phenomenal varieties all be renamed with pompous names reminiscent of Russian aristocracy?

Fair enough!

That decision should mollify Italian critics of the honorific's use, like Maialetto. After all, "Tsar/Czar" is simply the Russian adaptation of the Latin title "Caesar."

We used this honorific title for the best Italian mushroom: Amanita Caesarea. Food comes first, not those cold and lifeless stones... :D

But "Almandine Caesarea" sounds really well. For those almandines mixed with spess, getting the deep orangish color...

The Turkish mining company producing this wonderful mineral has just decided to abandon the idiotic word "zultanite" and go with good old "gem diaspore" to flog their product.

Progress!

And the new purple/red diaspores from Burma... wow. Is there ANYTHING they don't find in those gem gravels? What an amazing area.

Are you sure? At the end of last summer they were calling it Csarite and that was the marketing name. Personally I prefer Turkish Diaspore but hey ho!

Zultanate is the trade name owned by Zultanate Gems LLC based in Florida. There was a split between the mine owner and Zultanite Gems. The gem is Turkish Diaspore also known as color change diaspore. The new name Czarite is likely from the marketing of the mine owner.

I swear, if I discover a new gem variety I'm naming it schitolite. Even if it's absurdly beautiful.
